Your First Salt Cave Session

Everything you need to know before your first halotherapy session at NY Salt Den — what to wear, when to arrive, and what to expect inside the cave.

First Time at NY Salt Den? Here's Everything You Need to Know

First-time guests at NY Salt Den almost universally say the same thing after their session: "I had no idea it would feel like that — in the best possible way." The cave environment is unlike anything most people have experienced, and the deep relaxation that follows a 50-minute halotherapy session is genuinely profound.

To make sure your first visit is everything it can be, we've put together this complete preparation guide.

Book Your Session Online

Reserve your 50-minute salt cave session at vagaro.com/saltden/services or call (518) 785-7258. Sessions book up — especially weekend mornings — so we recommend booking at least a few days in advance.

Arrive 10 Minutes Early

Arrive at NY Salt Den 10–15 minutes before your session. This gives you time to check in, complete a brief intake form on your first visit, use the restroom, and get settled before your session begins.

Wear Comfortable, Breathable Clothing

Dress in loose, comfortable clothing you don't mind getting lightly dusted with salt — though the amount is minimal. We provide disposable shoe covers. Remove watches and jewelry if you prefer.

Leave Perfume and Strong Scents Behind

Strong fragrances can be unpleasant in the enclosed cave environment for other guests. Skip heavy perfume or cologne on session days.

Enter the Cave and Choose Your Chair

Your guide will show you into the cave. Choose one of our comfortable reclining chairs, settle in, and let yourself relax. The cave is kept at a comfortable temperature — you may want to bring a light blanket in cooler months.

Breathe Normally and Let Go

There's no technique to learn. Simply breathe normally through your nose and mouth. Close your eyes, enjoy the starry ceiling above, and let the 50 minutes unfold. Many guests drift off to sleep.

Hydrate After Your Session

Drink plenty of water after your session. Some guests experience mild throat clearing or a slight increase in mucus production in the hours after halotherapy — this is the therapy working and is completely normal.

What to Expect After Your First Session

Most guests leave their first salt cave session feeling deeply relaxed — lighter, calmer, and clearer-headed than when they arrived. Here's what's normal in the hours and days after:

  • Mild throat clearing or increased mucus production — this is the halotherapy working, loosening congestion. It typically resolves within a few hours.
  • Deep fatigue or drowsiness — the profound relaxation of the cave can make you feel sleepy. Plan accordingly — don't schedule anything demanding immediately after.
  • Improved breathing — many guests notice they're breathing more easily, especially if they came in with congestion or sinus issues.
  • Skin feeling slightly different — some guests notice skin feels slightly tighter or tingling after session. This resolves within an hour and is a sign of the salt's drawing action.

Pro tip: Your second and third sessions often feel even better than the first as your body becomes accustomed to the therapy and you know what to expect. Many regular guests say their third or fourth session was when they really "got it."

Will I feel anything during the session?
